Carmen del Berro
CarmenÂ’s art suggests dynamic scenes full of life, harmony of colour, a touch of sensibility and the warmth of the human figure
Carmen Del Berro was born in Ayamonte (Huelva). Her family moved to Madrid where she takes courses in painting at the studio of Julio Moises and studies drawing at the Circulo de Bellas Artes of Madrid. Her first solo exhibition took place in Oxford. She has lived in Paris for the last five years. In 1982 she received First Prize from the College of Architects and Surveyors of Albacete and First Price to the best water colour artist in Castilla La Mancha.
The following galleries where she has shown her works are worthy of mention: Bay Sala (Bilbao), Leonardo (Zaragoza), San Vicente (Valencia), Estudio Bosch (Gandia), Zurbaran (Cartagena), Llorens (Barcelona), Circulo 2 (Madrid) and Cano (Madrid). Her paintings have also been shown in Paris, Washington, New York, and Amsterdam. We now look at the following information which delves deeper into the art of Carmen Del Berro. Figures on the beach, paintings that form an alliance with pure impressionistic effect. The artist uses a brush strokes that is almost magical as well as sensual, loose and executed with splendid rhythm. Her setting, whether they are on a beach or not, are filled with poetry and colour, vibrating with all sorts of figures, shades and silhouettes that give the canvases an almost literary and narrative tone. Carmen’s art suggests dynamic scenes full of life, harmony of colour, a touch of sensibility and the warmth of the human figure – and one can catch a glimpse of daily life and of paintings by the sea. Her compositions are not only correct but also extremely brave and personal. This occurs specially at the time of tackling the suggestive disharmony of the figures or when she transfers the focus of attention towards the sides of the canvas. Her painting is a testimony to literature – by the sea or around a busy café. In such domestic scenes, Del Berro fills her works with multiple and diverse anecdotes, with figures and situations that end up in the painting. And, together with the actual strength of its figures, light plays a prominent part in transmitting and creating a special atmosphere, offering an attractive and intimate air. One of the special features in her paintings is the equal care for people and landscapes: Del Berro treats both so that the importance in the painting is shared in equal measure. From one painting to another, whether it is a scene or a figure (solitary or in a group), there exists a refinement which manifests itself in full vigour: from one painting to another the artist decides which of those two subjects (that is, the human element or the mere space) she should give the most importance to. In either case, the paintings of Carmen Del Berro bring a new register that combines beauty and language. This compatibility could serve to confirm an intelligence that is as aesthetic as it is narrative.
